Arte Espressa: The Literary Café in the Heart of Casapesenna
A journey from confiscation to culture in the heart of Casapesenna.
In the heart of Casapesenna, once marked by the presence of organized crime, stands the Caffè Letterario Arte Espressa, a symbol of cultural and social rebirth. This space, formerly belonging to the Casalesi clan, has been confiscated and transformed into a youth center thanks to the efforts of the social cooperative Maeditactio and the support of Agrorinasce, a public consortium dedicated to enhancing assets confiscated from the Camorra.
History of the confiscated asset
The building that houses the Literary Café Arte Espressa was originally a villa belonging to members of the Casalesi clan. After being confiscated by the Italian state, the structure was assigned to the Municipality of Casapesenna and subsequently entrusted to the social cooperative Maeditactio. With the support of Agrorinasce, a project for the recovery and enhancement of the property was initiated, aiming to create a space dedicated to culture and social inclusion.
The transformation into a Literary Cafè
Inaugurated in 2015, the Caffè Letterario Arte Espressa quickly became a landmark for the local community. It offers a wide range of cultural activities, including book presentations, art exhibitions, creative workshops, and concerts. The café’s mission is to promote culture as a tool for empowerment and personal growth, creating a welcoming and stimulating environment for people of all ages.
Collaborations and Impact on the community
The Caffè Letterario Arte Espressa actively collaborates with other local entities, including Il Paguro Ostello, a youth hostel located in another property confiscated from the Camorra and managed by the Giosef Italy association. This synergy has allowed for the organization of cultural events and educational programs aimed at young people, contributing to the strengthening of the social fabric in the area.
The presence of the literary café has had a significant impact on the community of Casapesenna, providing a safe and stimulating space where citizens can meet, express themselves, and grow together. This example of repurposing confiscated assets demonstrates how culture can become a driving force for social change and rebirth in areas marked by their past.
