Voluntary service in a Confiscated Asset: an Experience of Transformation
Between October 2022 and October 2023, the Paguro Ostello in Casapesenna became the heart of an extraordinary volunteering experience within the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program. Six young volunteers from Spain, Portugal, and France joined a unique project, helping to transform an asset seized from organized crime into a vibrant space for inclusion and community growth.
A Multidimensional Experience for Personal and Professional Growth
The project provided the volunteers with a dynamic and enriching environment, with diverse activities that strengthened both their professional skills and personal growth.
Management and Maintenance of Il Paguro Ostello
Il Paguro was not just their home, but also the heart of their daily activities. The volunteers actively participated in the maintenance of the hostel, ensuring its proper functioning and the hosting of guests and Erasmus+ projects. This experience allowed them to acquire skills in hospitality and youth center management.
Organization and Support of Local Events
The impact of the volunteers went beyond the walls of the hostel: they played a key role in the Casapesenna community, collaborating with local organizations such as Caffè Letterario Arte Espressa, Nuova Cucina Organizzata, and Liceo Segrè. Through non-formal education workshops and after-school activities, they created spaces for learning and creativity for children and teenagers, with a particular focus on those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Part of a Larger Network for Social Change
The ESC project was not limited to Casapesenna: the volunteers collaborated with other organizations within the network of confiscated assets in Caserta, supporting initiatives of legality, social justice, and community development. Through their commitment, they not only participated but actively contributed to building a more just and inclusive territory.
Promoting European Opportunities at a National Scout Camp
In August 2023, the volunteers’ commitment extended beyond local boundaries, reaching around 1,300 young people aged 16 to 19 during the National CNGEI Scout Camp. On this occasion, they designed and led the workshop “ESCape Disinterest,” an interactive activity to introduce young people to the opportunities offered by the European Union, inspiring them to pursue international experiences and feel part of a larger community.
Digital Communication and Social Media Management
In today’s world, digital storytelling is crucial for creating social impact. The volunteers managed the online communication of the project, handling social media channels, the website, and producing multimedia content. This experience allowed them to develop key skills in digital marketing and promoting solidarity projects.
An Impact that goes beyond Time
This year of ESC volunteering was not just an experience, but a journey of growth and transformation for everyone. The volunteers developed a strong sense of responsibility, teamwork, and adaptability, acquiring practical tools for their personal and professional future.
For the community of Casapesenna, the project was further confirmation of the power of solidarity and the importance of returning confiscated assets to the community.
At the end of this journey, one thing is certain: the impact of these young people will continue to be felt for a long time, because stories of change never end.
